Visit Rwanda
The Land of a Thousand Hills: gorillas, rainforest and a country that welcomes you gently.
Plan a Rwanda SafariWhy Rwanda
Rwanda is among the loveliest and best-run places to travel in Africa: green hills in every direction, tidy towns, forests wrapped in mist, rare animals, kind people and a history that moves everyone who learns it. They call it the Land of a Thousand Hills, and a safari here is calm, scenic and full of meaning. Mountain gorillas live in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest; Akagera has the savannah wildlife, and Lake Kivu the quiet shoreline. For a small country, there is a great deal to do.
You will find Rwanda in the middle of East Africa, with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo on its borders. It works well as a trip on its own, and just as well as one part of a longer East African safari.
Getting around is easy, and there is plenty to fill the days. A single visit can include a gorilla trek, a walk in ancient rainforest, a traditional game drive, time beside a lake, a day in Kigali and an introduction to local culture.
Rwanda rewards people who take their time. Come to slow down, think, explore and be near nature.
You might come for the gorillas, for the wildlife, the culture, the history or simply a peaceful break in beautiful country. Whichever it is, Rwanda leaves a strong and personal impression.
Where to go in Rwanda
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This is the experience Rwanda is best known for. In Volcanoes National Park you climb through rich forest and bamboo on the volcano slopes, looking for mountain gorillas where they live. It is a gentle, emotional encounter that people carry with them for life.
An hour beside a gorilla family ranks with the finest wildlife moments in Africa. You do more than look: you are near enough to sense them, to watch how they behave with each other, and to understand why protecting them matters.
The Canopy Walk in Nyungwe
Nyungwe’s canopy walkway is one of the most enjoyable things to do outdoors in Rwanda. It hangs high among the treetops and gives you a new angle on the forest: trees, hills, birds and mist all around you. It is easy, beautiful and stays in the mind.
If you like gentle adventure, photography and unusual viewpoints, add it to your Rwanda route.
Kigali City Experience
Kigali is one of the cleanest, calmest and best-organised capitals in Africa. Most Rwanda safaris begin here, and the city deserves more than a night in transit. There are markets, galleries, restaurants and craft centres to explore, along with places of real historical weight such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Time in Kigali gives the rest of your trip its context: you begin to understand Rwanda as well as admire it. A day here can be thoughtful, cultural and restful all at once.
Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari
Akagera National Park, in the east, is where Rwanda offers a classic savannah safari. Its plains, lakes, wetlands and woodland are home to elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, lions, rhinos and a great many birds.
After the forests and hills it makes a fine contrast. In Akagera you can go on game drives and boat safaris, watch birds and enjoy real quiet in the wild.
