Home of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro: safari on the grandest scale.
Plan a Tanzania SafariWhy Tanzania
Tanzania stands among the finest safari countries in Africa. Its plains seem to have no end, its wildlife is remarkable, its cultures are rich, and several of the continent’s best-known natural wonders are here. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the beaches of Zanzibar add up to a safari that is vast in scale and deeply moving.
The country lies in East Africa. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique border it, and the Indian Ocean runs along its eastern side. For travellers who want wildlife, scenery, culture, adventure and a beach in the same trip, it is hard to better.
Tanzania is made for the big moments. One journey can bring you herds on the move in the Serengeti, the drive down into Ngorongoro Crater, the elephants of Tarangire, a view of Mount Kilimanjaro, time with local communities and a last few days by the warm sea in Zanzibar.
First safari, honeymoon, family holiday, photography trip or part of a longer East African journey: whatever brings you, Tanzania will still be with you long after you are home.
Where to go in Tanzania
The Great Migration Experience
The Great Migration is one of the most impressive movements of animals on the planet. Each year enormous herds of wildebeest, zebra and other grazers circle through the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystem after fresh grazing. In Tanzania you can find them in different corners of the Serengeti, depending on the time of year and the path they take.
The sheer number of animals, the river crossings, the calving season and the predators that follow all make it one of the safari experiences people remember longest.
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is among the most remarkable natural sites in Tanzania. Inside its walls lie grassland, lakes and forest, with wildlife living against a spectacular backdrop. A game drive here is unlike most others, because so much scenery and so many animals are gathered in such a small space.
Lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and many kinds of bird may all be seen.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest mountain draws climbers, adventurers, photographers and people who are content to admire it from the country around its foot. If you want the challenge, a Kilimanjaro climb can be arranged as a trip of its own or added to a safari.
You do not have to climb it to feel its presence. The mountain lends weight to any journey through Tanzania.
Zanzibar Beach Escape
Tanzania is more than safari. Few countries in Africa combine wildlife and beach so well.
Zanzibar is where you slow down after the early mornings and long drives. The island has white beaches, warm sea, Swahili culture, seafood, spice tours, Stone Town, boat trips and relaxed places to stay on the coast. A safari followed by Zanzibar is one of the best ways to see the country.
