The Pearl of Africa: gorillas, great rivers and open savannah in a single journey.
Plan a Uganda SafariWhy Uganda
Few countries pack as much into one trip as Uganda. Mist hangs over the forests of Bwindi in the morning; by afternoon you can be watching elephants on the plains of Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls. It is wild country that still feels personal, and the memories last. When Afoyo Safaris plans your Uganda trip, we start from what you care about: how comfortable you want to be, how safe you feel, when you can travel, what you want to spend, and the experiences that brought you to Africa in the first place.
Uganda lies on the equator in East Africa. It has no coastline; its neighbours are Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the Great Lakes region, which explains how green and fertile the land is. Winston Churchill, struck by its colour and variety, called it the “Pearl of Africa” in 1908, and the name has never left. Modern Uganda is peaceful and welcoming, with living cultures and a history of kingdoms that goes back centuries.
That position on the map is what sets a Uganda safari apart. One itinerary can take you into dense, misty rainforest to sit with mountain gorillas, out onto open savannah for lions and elephants, and by boat to the base of Murchison Falls, often described as the most powerful waterfall in the world.
Jungle and big-game country lie next to each other here, which is rare. First-time visitors to Africa and well-travelled guests who want something with more depth both find the same thing: Uganda is not a list of sights to tick off. It is a trip that stays with you.
Where to go in Uganda
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
For many visitors this is the reason to come. Trackers and rangers lead you on foot through thick forest until, quite suddenly, a family of mountain gorillas is in front of you, at home and at ease. People describe the hour that follows as quiet, moving and humbling. Nobody forgets it.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is among the best places on earth to see mountain gorillas. If you are travelling to Uganda, make room for it.
Culture, Communities, and Local Life
Ugandans are known for their warmth, and the country holds a great variety of cultures. Away from the parks you can taste local cooking, listen to traditional music, walk through a village with someone who lives there, and browse markets and craft stalls. These hours give a safari its depth and show you a Uganda that wildlife alone cannot.
At Afoyo Safaris we think travel should be honest, respectful and worth something to both sides.
Murchison Falls and the River Nile
Few sights in Uganda are as dramatic. The whole Nile squeezes through a narrow cleft in the rock and crashes into the pool below. Around it, the park offers game drives, boat trips, excellent birding and long views over the river.
A stay at Murchison Falls brings wildlife, scenery and a sense of adventure together in one place.
Wildlife Safaris in National Parks
Uganda gives you the classic safari scenes without the crowds. Game drives take place in parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Kibale Forest, Lake Mburo and Kidepo Valley, through lovely open country, with elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles and a long list of birds to look for.
No two parks are alike, so we choose yours according to the animals and landscapes you most want to see.
